Denial is a tasteless tactic that substitutes deliberate ignorance for thoughtful planning.
FlavorsDiagnosing and treating some diseases can want hard choices. Separate therapies need to be chosen based upon microscopic facts and low probabilities of success. How patients and doctors deal with such problems often reveals much about their character. Denial is often the first reaction, and some habitancy never easily move on from this most primal response. Some doctors would enable this emotion by keeping out unrealistic hope. I tended to tell the truth, difficult as it might be, as I was not very good at lying. I therefore sympathize with Paul Ryan, and his funds plan, as it confronts a truly intractable issue of Medicare and collective protection funding. Rather than kick the can down the road and obfuscate the issues at hand, he is addressing the problems in a direct and semi-honest way. Although his plan is laden with distracting politically partisan minutia, at a basic level the proposal addresses the most basal issues with these entitlement programs. His legislation converts Medicare and collective protection from defined benefit plans to defined gift plans. This single change will have protean manifestations upon the time to come of healthcare in America. Not only does this conversion cut government spending obligations, it chooses a exact formula to ration healthcare for Americans. The Ryan plan no longer guarantees that Medicare will pay for all therapies for every disease. Instead, a clear amount of money is set aside to buy insurance. What that guarnatee easily pays left undetermined. Which therapies be paid for, and how much, will be negotiated between providers and the guarnatee companies. Needless to say, it will not be an open ended, "undefined benefits" program like Medicare. guarnatee clubs will limit what they will pay for, and how much, which is one type of rationing. As new, and more expensive therapies become available, less will be covered, as the money ready will probably not increase. The negotiations between the guarnatee clubs and providers will be rancorous and politically charged. The situation is somewhat reminiscent of each year decisions made by the single payer/government controlled systems of Canada and Great Britain, with a uniquely American flavor. Wealthy patients may be able to buy further coverage, important to something akin to the two-tier theory I have advocated. Application of a similar program to the rest of the healthcare theory will be suggested as well. Of course, the chances of the Ryan proposal being adopted any time soon is zero. Democratic pundits and apologists are already ranting about he destruction of Medicare. They are being disingenuous. Anything with any degree of honesty or comprehension realizes that Medicare in its' present form is doomed, and every moment we delay discussing the issue merely makes any clarification more difficult. Ryan has at least offered a plan, which deserves an honest hearing.
