You'll unlearn as you learn. I realized that I had to let go of ballet technique (think Swan Lake) to be able to move my hips (think Dirty Dancing). Sometimes to stretch and grow, you have to let go of old, comfortable habits to make room for new ones.

Follow a formula. Every art form has some sort of formula. You have to know the rules before you can break them. This is true in dance, and it is also true with losing body fat and getting fit.

But add your own flavor/style. Yes, corollary a formula, but don't forget to add You to the mix. In dance, the steps may be the same, but no one moves or feels the music in exactly the same way. With condition and wellness, no two habitancy are alike. Each persons past experiences and challenges are unique, so their path to success must reflect that and fit their lifestyle.

Work with an expert. Andres and I have taught a fitness class called Zumba together for 3 years, so I can hold my own with him in class. However, he is hands down an scholar salsa dancer. When you are trying something new, the quickest way to grow and get great is working with person with experience and training in that area. Otherwise you risk repeating past mistakes or falling back into old habits.

You won't be good in one lesson. There was no way I was going to be a expert salsa dancer after one lesson. Similarly, there is no way you're going to drop 20 pounds in two weeks or run a marathon after one combine of sessions on the treadmill. Results take practice and time. It takes layering and small steps to progress.
